The role of the Volunteer Program Director is to further the mission of Franciscan Outreach by recruiting, directing, and supporting the full-time (FT) members of the Franciscan Outreach Volunteer (FOV) program who come to live in intentional community and work at Franciscan Outreach. The goal of this position is to develop an engaged and productive full-time volunteer community that is mission driven. Franciscan Outreach Volunteers (FOV) is a 1 year (renewable) program based on the values of Service, Community, Spirituality, and Simple Living. Volunteers live and work at Franciscan Outreach, a non-profit agency, providing emergency and long-term services to guests who are homeless, poor and marginalized in Chicago. Volunteers work directly with the guests, providing hospitality and services at our Soup Kitchen and Shelter sites. Volunteers live in intentional community with 11-13 other volunteers, participating in retreats, weekly reflections, meetings, and community nights. The Volunteer Program Director is responsible for running all aspects of the FOV program.
Programming and Formation- Create annual curriculum in line with program values. Conduct an orientation and 3 retreats per year. Plan weekly community meetings, reflections, and community nights. Actively pursue a "ministry of presence" and engagement with volunteer community.
Recruitment- Recruit and place 12 volunteers each year. Network on local, national, and international levels. Attend service fairs and present at colleges/universities. Advertise and recruit online. Interview applicants, conduct reference checks and background checks.
Supervision and Support- Coordinate performance reviews, maintain all records for volunteers and assist with student loan deferral/forbearance. Engage alumni through quarterly e-newsletter and other methods. Makes disciplinary decisions in conjunction with Community Assistant when appropriate.
Program Administration- Attend meetings and collaborate with relevant organizations (CASP, CVN, FSN). Maintain and update website and social media. Oversee volunteer health insurance, AmeriCorps (when applicable), immigration and visa paperwork. Create and track program budget. Maintain agency vehicles.
Responsibilities may include scheduling, coordinating, and cultivating relationships with community volunteers.
Other duties as assigned
We are seeking a socially-committed individual with previous experience working with young adults in a counseling/campus ministry or related role. Applicants should feel confident engaging and mentoring young adults while maintaining professional boundaries. Previous experience in post-grad volunteer program and intentional community living required. Familiarity with issues of homelessness or experience working in homeless social-services is a plus. Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Theology, Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Nonprofit Management or other related field. Ability to pass a background check. Valid driver’s license. This position requires 3-5 weeks of travel each year. Hours include evenings once per week and occasional overnights and weekends.
