Jewish Council for Youth Services (JCYS) is a 110-year old, Chicago-based nonprofit organization that provides early childhood education and camping programs to a diverse community across Chicagoland. With a budget of over $11 million and a 180-person staff, JCYS programs touch over 10,000 families a year through eight locations. In addition, JCYS’s board of directors is a training ground for future Jewish civic and philanthropic leaders, and serves as important fiduciaries of the agency.
The Executive Director is a charismatic and forward-thinking leader with superior management skills. The position directs all aspects of the organization, reports directly to the Board of Directors, and manages the senior staff. The Executive Director is a person who is committed to the JCYS mission:

The successful candidate will be able to create and implement a vision, will have proven management skills, and be someone who can motivate and inspire both staff and donors. S/he will have a solid base in fundraising, particularly in capital campaigns, donor cultivation, major gift acquisition, and planned giving. The Executive Director will have financial competencies that include budgeting and the ability to read, interpret, and understand financial statements. S/he will possess outstanding speaking and writing skills and will be able to communicate effectively and persuasively to board members, donors and families. The Executive Director is the face of JCYS to the public and, as such, will promote the image of JCYS and serve as a liaison to external audiences to increase the organization’s reputation, visibility, and growth.
The Executive Director will have the following primary responsibilities:
Lead a committed senior management team to execute JCYS’s mission and deliver top-flight programming
Serve as the external face of JCYS in the Chicagoland Jewish community and beyond, focusing on cultivating donor relationships and expanding community awareness of the organization
In coordination with the board, develop and implement a strategic vision and plan that will define JCYS’s future, including the programming it offers and the communities it serves
Ensure that the agency is financially viable by driving operating profits, grant applications, managing agency debt, and cultivating support from individual donors, foundations, fundraising events, and corporate partners
High-level oversight of early childhood and camping operations at multiple facilities
Spearhead capital campaigns as needed to fund new initiatives
Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for the agency’s central office
Lead the agency and staff through major projects and initiatives
Increase JCYS’s visibility in the communities it serves and beyond
Help recruit and train board members and ensure that they grow and mature into future Jewish civic leaders and philanthropists
The successful Executive Director will possess the following personal and professional qualifications:
At least 10 years of leadership and management in a nonprofit or for-profit organization
Experience and comfort with fundraising, including capital campaigns and major gift cultivation, as well as a broad knowledge of the Chicago’s Jewish and non-Jewish philanthropic community
Understanding of – and knowledge about – the Chicagoland Jewish community is a strong plus
Demonstrated experience working effectively with a board of directors, including experience developing board capacity in leadership, governance and fundraising
Demonstrated experience developing and managing a budget with multiple cost centers and operating revenues; experience managing or working with organizational financing and accounting functions
Visionary team leader who is unafraid to think boldly and who knows how to create consensus among the board and the staff
Experience managing and implementing change within a large organization
A Bachelor’s Degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred in either business, nonprofit management, marketing, or a related field
