Reporting to the Executive Director, the full-time Chief Development Officer (CDO) will oversee, lead, and manage the $2+ million fundraising operations for St. John of God Community Services (SJOGCS), located in Westville Grove, New Jersey. This position will supervise and mentor a full-time Administrative Assistant, with the possibility of additional staff in the future.
The CDO will have deep knowledge and experience in individual giving and annual funds, major gift/planned giving, corporations and foundation relations, and campaign strategy and implementation. The ideal candidate will be a proven leader and collaborative colleague who is comfortable leading initiatives for a complex organization.
As a member of the Senior Management Team, the CDO will be very hands-on and responsible for leading all aspects of the Development Office, including:
Actively supporting SJOGCS’s mission, values, and vision by embracing hospitality and “doing good for others”;
Devising innovative fundraising strategies and implementing effective development plans, especially while growing and diversifying the base of donor gifts, including the grant/foundation portfolio and the major gifts program;
Setting budget expectations and achieving fundraising financial goals through individual giving, direct mail, grants/foundations, corporate giving, special events, and major/planned gifts;
Working closely with the Communications and Marketing Department to frame messages for new and broader donor audiences, generate new ideas and partnerships, and expand opportunities for greater visibility in the community;
Creating and overseeing a variety of donor-centered cultivation/stewardship strategies; and
Educating and immersing the Executive Director, Board of Directors, committees, staff, and parents in the culture of philanthropy.
The CDO will serve as the primary point person for all fundraising initiatives with the overall responsibility for articulating the funding needs to various audiences through a well thought-out Case for Support and Annual Plan that will raise incrementally higher levels of gifts from a variety of constituents connected to SJOGCS. The CDO must be comfortable asking for cash and deferred gifts in the five-plus figure range. This position is expected to work some evenings and weekends.
The CDO’s qualifications and attributes include the following:
Minimum of 7-10 years of senior development experience with a track record of success, especially with major and planned gifts fundraising.
Bachelor’s degree required (philanthropy, communications, business administration, etc.).
Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) is a definite plus, or equivalent experience.
Experience working in a complex and fast-paced organization is preferred; ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising program and preparing a realistic Annual Plan and Master Calendar to achieve goals; experience with coordination and preparation of project budgets is required
Excellent interpersonal/relationship-building skills, oral/written communications skills, as well as strong “people” skills.
Familiarity with New Jersey’s philanthropic community a definite plus.
Direct hands-on experience with donor databases/software (Raiser’s Edge, DonorPerfect, etc.), as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and QuickBooks
High energy, creative mind, and a good sense of humor required; able to take on the major responsibilities and tasks of the CDO position with enthusiasm while providing strong leadership
Track record of taking initiative, being a self-starter, and must be able to work independently and collaboratively.
Direct experience working with nonprofit boards strongly preferred.

Additional Salary Information: The annual salary range is $90,000-$105,000 plus benefits package (vacation, sick leave, medical, vision, dental, life insurance, and retirement). Moving expenses are negotiable.
