NAKASEC just completed a Communications Plan towards building a more robust communications infrastructure and expansion of its digital engagement. Our affiliates have been trained in the basics of strategic communications and digital strategy and have been putting their new knowledge to work. This year, NAKASEC needs more support to assist the communications capacity nationally. We are on the search for a clever innovator, strategic thinker, and strong, creative writer to join our team to help build out our new plan. The ideal candidate for this position is one who trusts and believes in NAKASEC’s theory of change and is ready to push our storytelling abilities to the next level.
Summary of Role:
The NAKASEC Communications Fellow is a part-time position focusing on executing the direction, vision, and strategy of NAKASEC’s Communications Plan. The fellow will ensure that our presence on multiple platforms is sustained and consistent. They will play a major role in building out an archival infrastructure for the organization to document our work as well as assisting in streamlining the day to day communications demands needed to make internal communications more robust. The role requires consistent collaboration with the NAKASEC & affiliates team to innovate and develop nuanced strategies for digital base building.
Media monitoring and reporting
Drafting, coordinating and disseminating statements that respond to timely events for NAKASEC & affiliates
Producing communications materials for NAKASEC campaigns including fliers, talking points, fact sheets and other relevant materials
Providing speaker trainings for community leaders to prepare them for press interviews and speaking at meetings and events
Curating the oral history of NAKASEC and affiliates and present-day stories
Developing a digital communications campaign
Managing the day to day social media engagement
Coordinating and updating content for NAKASEC website
Drafting NAKASEC’s monthly e-newsletter
Ensuring listserv is promoted and updated
Producing communications materials for fundraising purposes
Hourly pay will be commensurate with experience. 20 hours of work per week.

Analysis/politics around racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, economic inequality, ableism and other social, economic and racial justice issues
Lived experience and deep investment in digital communications and social media (Engaging people on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, etc.)
Previous work in communications in movement spaces
Must be social media savvy - able to use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat very well
Experience in building relationships with ethnic and mainstream media outlets
Wordpress proficiency - need them to go through the website and make basic updates (bios, address, content etc)
Social media content creation
Experience with a CRM
Understanding around traditional strategic communications as well as digital strategy
Strong writing skills
Must be able to create culturally relevant social media content for the Asian American Community.
