Action Civics LA is seeking a Program Fellow to help grow and develop our innovative youth Action Civics and leadership programming in Southern California middle and high schools. Beginning our fourth full year of programming in the greater Los Angeles region, we are seeking a creative, experienced, and motivated youth worker who is passionate about youth participation in community and political decision-making processes. Join our expanding team!
History and Background:
Action Civics LA is an initiative sponsored by Mikva Challenge. Modeled after the successful civic engagement programming developed for youth in Chicago, Action Civics LA provides opportunities for young people in Los Angeles and Orange County to engage in Action Civics, community problem-solving, and seeks to increase youth voice in local decision-making processes. Using Mikva Challenge’s Issues to Action program, local teachers implement a curriculum that empowers students with the skills, knowledge, and dispositions to be “superstar citizens.” At the core is the idea that students explore their communities from an asset-based perspective, identify issues that are important to them and their community, research the issue, analyze power, and ultimately develop an action plan and take action.
We train teachers in this curriculum, provide ongoing classroom support, and host citywide events that gather participating students to showcase their efforts. In addition, Action Civics LA is seeking to expand its Elections in Action program that brings young people directly into the electoral process by hosting candidate forums, serving as poll workers, volunteering on campaigns, and engaging in peer voter education and registration efforts.
One of the premiere national organizations developing youth to be informed, empowered, and active citizens and community leaders, Mikva Challenge was founded in 1998 as a tribute to former White House Counsel, Judge, and U.S. Congressman Abner Mikva and his wife Zoe, a former public school teacher and lifelong education activist. We are a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization guided by principles central to our founders: the best way to learn democracy is to do democracy. The consequences for young people are transformative – to identity, to motivation to serve one’s community, to improvements in academic and social lives, and to the development of active, thoughtful citizens and leaders. Mikva Challenge is the founder of Action Civics and is the premier organization developing civic leadership and civic identity of over 20,000 adolescent youth across the country. Mikva is poised for growth to build a national Action Civics movement!
