ABOUT EL HOGAR DEL NIÑO:
We are a community service organization located in the Chicago Pilsen community - Loomis and 18th Street. For over 40 years, El Hogar del Niño has been helping to prepare children and their families for a successful future. Our Pre-School program is accredited by the highest standard in early education (NAEYC). We also provide after-school programs for kindergarten through seventh grade (age twelve). We also have Home Visiting and Family Child Care Homes programs that serve children ages six weeks to age five in the home.
Under the general supervision of the Toddlers/Twos Coordinator, the Head Teacher is responsible for providing an overall classroom environment that is aligned to the agency’s philosophy and policies, that supports the education and socialization of all children under the HeadTeacher’s care, and that strengthens the home-school connection.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Promotes recognition, acceptance, and positive interactions among children and staff.
2. Monitors overall health and safety of all children on a daily basis and reports any sign of illness, injury or possible abuse to the Toddlers/Twos Coordinator.
3. Meets with Toddlers/Twos Coordinator on a regular basis for supervision and support.
4. With the classroom team, supervises all of the children’s activities, modeling respect and acceptance of each child as an individual.
5. With the classroom team, completes all screenings and assessments on each child, as amended by the State Child Care Licensing standards and Prevention Initiative performance standards.
6. With the classroom team, plans, prepares and implements developmentally appropriate child-initiated and teacher-directed activities for individuals and small/large groups of children. Activities should: • Allow for children to make choices • Address needs identified in the assessments • Build children’s self-confidence • Promote multiculturalism • Present appropriate challenges • Present opportunities for collaborative learning • Develop critical thinking skills.
7. With the classroom team, identifies children who may need more specialized services or who may be referred to Early Intervention Program.
8. Implements the NAEYC criteria and the Creative Curriculum for Infants, Toddler and Twos.
9. Participates in the Implementation of the Parent Curriculum, “Baby Talk”.
10. Participates in the “Reading Is Fundamental Program” sponsored by the CPS (Chicago Public Schools) Community Partnership Program.
11. In conjunction with classroom teaching team, assumes responsibility for classroom equipment and supplies, reporting repair and maintenance needs to Maintenance staff and completes necessary documentation.
12. Meets with classroom team weekly to complete lesson plans and discuss individual child's needs. Submits lesson plans to Coordinator by 3:00 PM on Thursdays and posts lesson plan in classroom by 9:00 AM on Mondays.
13. Attends weekly staff meetings, in-service trainings, CPS training, required on-line trainings, and other appropriate child development conferences/workshops, upon approval of the Toddlers/Twos Coordinator.
14. Participates in interviews and selection of classroom staff and completes annual evaluations of classroom staff. The Head Teacher assists in the completion of the annual program self-evaluations, (DFSS, CPS-Community Partnership Program).
15. Welcomes parents into the classroom, develops a positive relationship with them and provides experiences and activities for them that enhance their roles as the primary influence in their child's growth and development. These experiences/activities will include participation in parent meetings/workshops bi-monthly as well as parent-teacher conferences and at least 2 home visits per school-year. The Head Teacher will be available for formal and informal conferences on a daily basis.
16. Informs parents about daily classroom routine expectations, policies and volunteer opportunities.
17. Assures timely completion of all required records and documentation related to our funding sources. These include: • Screenings (Developmental screening ASQ-3 and ASQ-SE Ages and Stages Questionnaire) • Assessments through Teaching Strategies GOLD • Written observations of children (daily) • Attendance records (daily) • Monthly reports • Annual evaluations • Documenting individual/family needs and referrals given • Turning in itemized receipts for all program purchases/expenses.
18. Implements and models family style eating during meal times and completes meal participation forms during meal times (not after meal or at the end of the day) and personnel activity reports for Child and Adult Care Food Program.
19. Responsible for ensuring the program complies with El Hogar’s and all City and State licensing requirements, including: • Promoting the health and safety of all the children • Following sanitation procedures and universal precautions • Completing a bi-annual physical exam • Complying with the Confidentiality and Child Abuse and Neglect Acts as a mandated reporter • Complying with the American's with Disabilities Act.
20. Completes paperwork in a timely manner and maintains up-to-date and accurate education folders.
21. Supervises and evaluates assistant teachers and teacher aides.
22. Ensures that parents complete sign-in and sign-out sheets.
23. Other duties as assigned.
