The Public Library Association (PLA), a division of the American Library Association, is seeking a program manager to organize and advance multiple initiatives supporting public libraries. This grant-funded position will play supporting and occasionally lead roles in diverse, long term projects PLA develops for its members, which improve library services and programs through strategies such as education and professional development, mentoring and networking, tool/resource development and distribution, sharing of model programs, and more.
PLA is the largest association supporting the unique and evolving needs of public library professionals. Founded in 1944, PLA serves 9,000 members in public libraries large and small in communities across the United States and Canada, with a growing presence around the world. PLA offers professional development and networking opportunities, a biennial national conference, and diverse initiatives that improve and create public library programs and services in areas such as outcome measurement, literacies (early, digital, health), family engagement, and more.
The program manager will report to the Deputy Director, co-managing a range of projects for PLA’s expanding program/partnership portfolio. Projects include but are not limited to library service areas such as family engagement, summer learning and meals programs, digital literacy, civic engagement, equity and inclusion, and consumer health information. Work varies on each project but generally involves coordinating the efforts of committees or other subject matter experts; planning, staffing and documenting project-related meetings and educational programs; developing written and educational content for print, web and presentation; and drafting informational and marketing communications to public library staff and other stakeholders. Some reporting and other administrative duties are also required. Assistance with fundraising will be required to initiate and/or sustain projects.
Specific responsibilities include:
Provide staffing support for assigned committees and task forces (family engagement, digital literacy, consumer health, others TBD) by scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, notetaking, and following up on actions discussed;
Assist the lead staff and subject matter experts for PLA’s family engagement project to develop and present educational programming to the public library field;
Coordinate with external web and instructional design vendors to make improvements to PLA’s digital literacy (computer and Internet) training tools, and promote their use to public libraries;
Develop content for educational programming via webinars and conference sessions with other staff and PLA member leaders;
Create communications about assigned projects, to educate the public library field and encourage participation, for publication via PLA outlets such as email newsletters, blogs, and web sites;
Prepare reports on project accomplishments on both a regular (for instance, quarterly) and as-needed basis for PLA staff and board leadership, funders, external partners, and others;
Conduct research and initial outreach to potential funding sources such as partner organizations, corporate and foundation giving programs, and government agencies; and
Work with the Deputy Director and other PLA staff to identify, evaluate and recommend new focus areas or groups PLA should engage with to support existing or new projects.
Closing Date: Consideration of candidates will begin on August 1, 2017, and continue until the position is filled.
This is a full-time, grant-funded, in-house position based in Chicago, IL. The grant funding requires reporting and renewal but is currently projected to last through 2026.

This position requires the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. The successful candidate will have a minimum of five years’ experience, with seven or more preferred, in an association or other nonprofit managing one or more initiatives. He or she will be seeking to grow professionally by gaining experience on a wide range of projects and handling a diverse set of tasks, and will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
Other requirements include:
Project management: Ability to develop workplans and project schedules and execute them. Ability to see a project on multiple levels simultaneously and to schedule work accordingly. Strong organizational abilities and problem-solving skills.
Association/non-profit management: Familiarity with the organizational structures, governance, communications, financials, and marketing of a membership association.
Communications and interpersonal skills: Strong writing skills with the ability to write for multiple purposes/audiences. Ability to work with other staff as part of a team to achieve project goals, and to build productive staff/member volunteer relationships.
Grant writing and managing: Ability to contribute to the development of proposals and budgets for foundation and government support. Capacity and interest to research prospects and identify potential funders. Experience monitoring goals of grant-funded projects and collecting data for required reporting.
Subject matter interest: Capacity and enthusiasm for learning about library programs in diverse areas such as education and literacy, employment, technology, equity and more.
Computer skills: Proficiency with productivity tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and database management), along with some social media expertise (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Some web design experience relevant but not required.
College degree required.
