Umoja Student Development Corporation is looking for a dynamic individual who is passionate about changing the lives of young people and improving high school culture. The Social Emotional Learning Specialist will be on the front lines, leading Umoja programming with our high school partnerships and building proactive relationships with students, counselors, teachers, administrative staff, and other community organizations.
This position is an adult coach and program specialist that primarily works with teachers, counselors and administrators to manage several aspects of seminar: Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), Postsecondary Readiness, and the integration of Restorative Justice principles and practice. This position will provide real time and ongoing guidance and feedback to teachers and counselors and other relevant adults through professional development, one-on-one coaching conversations and collaboration with a variety of stakeholders within the school community to enhance the implementation of Umoja’s curricular resources and the creation of safe spaces for teachers and students to co-exist. This position requires passion and creativity with strong planning, organizational, and facilitation skills, primarily with adults. The Social Emotional Learning Specialist serves like an educator, counselor, community organizer and entrepreneur to mobilize and inspire others around the common goal of improved student outcomes. This position reports directly to the Director of Social and Emotional Learning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Own a relationship at one of Umoja’s partner schools. Plan and execute programming at these schools, including coordinating site-specific evaluation efforts and program model implementation
Design, facilitate and coach teachers in professional development and one-on-one settings on a variety of educational constructs but especially those related to the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) needs of students in order to support academic achievement
Model facilitation techniques with teachers around the appropriate implementation of Umoja’s experiential curriculum in classrooms
Organize teams of students, teachers, and faculty leaders to support the implementation of seminar initiatives including seminar classes, student development days, and postsecondary programming
Refine seminar curricula modules on an ongoing basis and ensure alignment with school and district goals and Illinois State learning standards
Engage with students at partner schools through strategic collaborations that support school-wide goals
Support the planning, preparation and implementation of annual Umoja University professional development week for teachers, youth development professionals and school teams
Establish and maintain proactive working relationships with community and social service organizations, professional partners, and other service providers in support of seminar and program initiatives at partnering sites
Complete all organizational documentation and reporting requirements for services, activities, and program expenses
