The coordinator of portfolio programs works in the College, Career, and Alumni department to primarily support the artistic development and portfolio work of Marwen students. This position contributes to maintaining high-quality, comprehensive portfolio, college, and career programming to support students, families, and alumni. S/he will also work with the education team to support Marwen’s mission.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as Marwen’s expert counselor in the arts by providing individual support to middle school students applying to high school arts programs, high school students applying to art colleges and programs, and alumni applying to arts-related jobs; the counseling caseload range is about 25-40 individuals
Coordinate portfolio development courses throughout the year focused on various elements of building portfolios for art schools, programs, and scholarships
Facilitate portfolio workshops and events, including documentation and portfolio review and critique events
Research and write best practices portfolio resources and handouts
Coordinate Marwen’s Portfolio Lab space, including equipment monitoring, teaching artist and course utilization of space, and individual student appointments for documentation
Create and coordinate a documentation program initiative to provide technical support and learning opportunities for students, teaching artists, and alumni to document work
College and Career Programs and Partnerships
Work with the college, career, and alumni team to support department programs including college visits and annual college and career fairs
Manage the Art Institute Learning and Public Engagement internship for Marwen high school students
Coordinate external partnerships for residency, internship, and artistic development program opportunities for alumni
Participate in the coordination of Marwen’s on-site residency program for teaching artists, studio facilitators, and alumni
Work with the Assistant Director to coordinate opportunities with Marwen’s art school scholarship partners, solidify partnership agreements, and coordinate outreach to students and families
Explore new partnerships with pre-college summer programs at arts colleges, including scholarship opportunities for Marwen students to attend
Explore new initiatives for career support for Marwen alumni emerging artists
Student and Department Support
Build and maintain relationships with students and families to support students’ experience at Marwen and their own goals for next steps
Work with education staff to grow student support initiatives that address the needs of Marwen’s students and families
Participate and contribute to education department initiatives such as teaching artist development events, data projects, staff retreats, and strategic planning
Attend education department meetings and events, such as staff meetings, new student orientation and exhibition openings
Support the administrative responsibilities of the college, career, and alumni department, including student tracking, data initiatives, annual budgeting process, and administrative paperwork
Extensive knowledge of the portfolio development and documentation processes and experience in counseling young people in building a body of artwork
Strong foundation in the college application process with prior counseling experience specifically with students and families from under-resourced schools and communities
Specialized knowledge of art schools and arts programs and an awareness of college options locally, regionally, and nationally
Comprehensive understanding of the financial aid process, with a focus on scholarship opportunities in the arts
Background in the arts, education, and youth development and a demonstrated and sincere desire to work with youth and experience building relationships with students and families
Vision for students’ artistic growth and supporting young people to develop their artistic voice, and connecting students to education and career opportunities in the arts
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including after-school hours and Saturdays
Ability to prioritize tasks efficiently, have excellent communication skills, maintain databases, be detail oriented
