We have built on our portfolio of early learning centers to expand this transformative culture into a birth to eighth grade school composed of an Early Childhood and Elementary School. Christopher House Elementary School is now looking for a Intermediate Teachers to provide rigorous, data-driven instruction in a nurturing school climate to close the achievement gap for the low-income student body. We are looking for ambitious and reflective teachers committed to their own professional growth in order to maximize their impact on student achievement. This position will have a unique opportunity to establish the school’s culture, climate and academic track record during its founding years.
Teacher Objective: Determine the needs and provide for the education and development of 1st grade students. Promote school culture and ensure the needs of all learners in the classroom are met.
Responsibilities: Provide a high quality learning environment and instruction that meets the needs of all learners in the classroom. Promote school culture and set high expectations for students’ achievement. Coordinate with Christopher House support staff and larger education team to ensure supportive learning environments for all students in the classroom. Model appropriate behavior.
Develop lesson plans consistent with the Common Core and the schools’ college prep curriculum. Develop strategies for differentiation in the classroom and for homework. Monitor the academic, social-emotional gains of students through regular, measurable assessment. Use data-driven evaluation and reflective teaching evaluation to improve instruction and increase academic achievement of students. Leverage the arts to promote student achievement, creativity and critical-thinking skills. Manage administration of the classroom. Some of these responsibilities include marking daily attendance and lateness, checking homework, making photocopies, and displaying student work. Develop a strong home-school relationship with the families in order to ensure effective communication to best meet the needs of students. Prepare progress and report cards and conduct parent-teacher conferences four times a year. Manage a classroom website. Meet with families as needed and serve as a positive representative for Christopher House. Communicate school-wide and agency-wide events to parents.
Professional Development: Participate in weekly professional development workshops. Attend summer professional development series, trainings, and participate on relevant committee’s as needed for position. Expand professional knowledge through Christopher House in-agency training and development programs, through professional conferences and education and by membership in appropriate professional groups.
Quality Assurance: Utilize data-driven assessment, including classroom assessment tools, STEP, PSI, and NWEA, to inform curricular and instructional choices. Participate in regular data and assessment review sessions in order to differentiate instruction and create more effective classroom learning.
Schedule: Teachers are expected to arrive at 7:30 am every morning and stay until 4:00 pm. A dedicated lunch break and planning period are included daily. Each Friday, students will have early dismissal at 1:30pm and teachers will participate in professional development from 1:30p.m. – 4:00p.m. Teachers will also be expected to participate in planning meetings and parent events after school from time to time. These dates will be announced by the Principal in advance. Teachers will follow the academic calendar for vacations and holidays.
Qualifications: A minimum of two – three years teaching experience in an urban setting is strongly preferred. Bi-lingual /ESL endorsement highly desirable. Experience with NWEA, STEP, PSI, PASI, Lucy Caulkins Units of Study, Balanced Literacy, Everyday Mathematics, Math Expressions, FOSS Science, Social Studies Alive, and arts-integration preferred.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education required. Type 03 or Type 04 Certification required. Master’s Degree preferred.
