School and Tutors on Wheels provides free individualized adult English literacy education to speakers of other languages through the efforts of a dedicated corps of more than 300 volunteer literacy tutors. As a sponsored ministry of the Congregation of St. Joseph, School and Tutors on Wheels works toward systemic change in society by empowering students to build their strengths and the effective use of their voice to ensure the inclusion of those who are typically excluded, underrepresented or undervalued. School and Tutors on Wheels exists, "That All May Be One".
Under the supervision of the Program Director, The Program Manager provides guidance and support to volunteer tutors at host sites in communities in western Cook, DuPage and Will counties.
Coordinates and provides individualized English literacy instruction at various sites; ensures consistently high quality of program
Recruits volunteer tutors; responsible for volunteer retention
Conducts student interviews and intake; places students at the appropriate learning level and matches tutors and students; administers and grades student pre-tests and post-tests
Supports volunteer tutors through providing guidance on developing lesson plans and learning goals, researching and making available core and supplemental instructional materials, and applying English proficiency testing results to student instruction
Fosters positive relationships and sense of community with students and tutors
Maintains excellent professional working relationships with STOW site partners (churches, libraries, and community centers)
Collects and compiles data and information related to program, students and tutors; enters data and information into the appropriate data collection system in an accurate and in a timely fashion.
Assists in the preparation of tutor trainings; participates in delivering training presentations and attends all sessions
Assists with community outreach activities, external communications and events as requested
Takes part in program evaluation and program development activities
Experience in English as a Second Language instruction
Tutoring experience preferred
Strong communication and relationship building skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Experience in data entry and comfortable with technology
