The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations including functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, grant (including federal)/contract administration and managing the month end close process. These responsibilities involve initiative and creativity, continuous process improvement, strong customer service and using appropriate methods, e.g. benchmarks, to measure success in achieving performance objectives. The Controller will ensure that Elevate Energy has the systems and procedures in place to support organizational growth as well as effective program implementation to conduct clean audits in accordance with GAAP.
The Controller reports to the CFO and will work closely with program leaders and their staff, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can enhance program operations. The Controller will also help lead the team in planning, evaluating, and problem solving related to financial operations to maintain a cohesive, skilled, agile and professional department.
Manage one or more direct reports
Oversee daily accounting activities, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll functions and reconciliations
Lead accounting functions to ensure accurate record-keeping, reporting, and compliance with GAAP
Lead grants and contracts initiatives including proposals and reporting
Oversee maintenance and organization of department network files including all grant documents and correspondence
Manage monthly revenue calculations for grants and contracts and reconcile variances for program status reports vs. government mandated financial reports
Manage timeliness of close process including supporting the preparation, review and finalization of monthly financial reports
Partner with senior leadership, human resources (HR) and information technology (IT) staff to enhance and better integrate finance, HR, and IT functions.
Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment
Play a key role in Elevate Energy audit preparation and activities and lead tax filing preparation
Support other members of the Finance team and CFO in the monitoring and analysis of Elevate Energy’s financial performance, treasury functions and relationships and partnership with Information Technology with respect to financial applications and software solutions, as needed
Maintain and refine cash forecast tool for critical organizational decisions in conjunction with Manager of Finance and CFO
Review proposals and budgets to ensure full cost recovery and assist with preparation of all proposal budgets, amendments and revisions and manage reporting functions to funders
Maintain current knowledge of accounting standards as well as Federal award requirements and OMB Super Circular; remain current on changes to governmental regulations
Develop and mentor team members and direct reports in line with department growth plan
Partner across organization on reporting, process and communication with teams including Legal, Human Resources, and Information Technology
Ensure proper internal controls are in place and develop changes in partnership with CFOOther duties as required
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, finance, or related field required; CPA preferred
Minimum 7+ years of experience and knowledge of not-for-profit accounting, including financial reporting and analysis, general ledger, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, complex cost allocations, and annual audits
Supervisory experience required
A strong track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants is essential; Single audit experience a plus
Ability to read, analyze and interpret financial reports and legal documents
Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers
Excellent knowledge of financial software systems, including Microsoft Office, ERP and financial systems. Experience with Dynamics SL a plus
Ability to develop and implement strategies to improve operations and processes
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to utilize independent judgment, make decisions and set priorities with minimal supervision
