The Leslie Shankman School Corporation (LSSC) represents well over sixty years of dedication and commitment to children in the Chicago area with special learning and emotional needs. The LSSC founded at the University of Chicago operates two schools: The Hyde Park Day School and The Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School. The Hyde Park Day School is a private special education school for children with learning disabilities and the Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School is a residential and day school for children with emotional disorders. The LSSC recently opened the Brooke Whitted Center, a transitional living program holistically serving college bound emerging young adults challenged with mental health issues or autism. Additionally, our organization includes a foundation that supports our corporation. Together, the entities have an operating budget totaling $15 million and approximately $14 million in investable assets.
Position Title: Staff Accountant
Position Type: Full-time, Exempt

This position reports to the Finance Manager and will have responsibilities for day to day accounting and payroll functions. This position includes duties involving a variety of accounting functions and substantial intercompany transactions as well as allocating expenses across our various entities. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in accounting and some experience performing varied accounting functions. The candidate should be dedicated to accuracy, be willing to learn, have excellent interpersonal skills, be a team player and be able to meet deadlines.
Essential Responsibilities include:
Making journal entries
Compiling scheduled financial statements and reports for external parties
Providing support for the month-end and year-end closings
Payroll functions as needed
Research and analysis of various P&L accounts
Monthly balance sheet reconciliations
Preparing for and supporting audits
Assisting with processing cash receipts
Performing routine and special order purchasing
Resolving collections and reconciling accounts receivable activity
Working with external vendors as required
Participating in special projects and performing other duties as assigned.
Skills and knowledge Requirements:
Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
Experience with the preparation of journal entries and full working knowledge of accrual accounting
Knowledge of investment accounting a plus
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Solid analytical and problem-solving skills
Good attention to detail
Self-motivated and driven person who is dedicated to 100% accuracy, teamwork and meeting deadlines
Education/Experience Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent is required
Two years of accounting experience preferred
