The Director for Pastoral Minister Development will support human resources efforts for parishes activated as part of the Renew My Church (RMC) initiative. The Director will work closely with the HR Manager for RMC, the Parish Vitality (PVC) and Lifelong Formation coordinators (LFC), and other RMC subject matter experts.
The Director will act as a ministerial subject matter expert and engage parish leadership in identifying ministerial needs for the parish groupings and with talent assessment. They will work collaboratively with parishes in strategic talent planning based upon the needs of the parish configurations. The Director will be responsible for screening ministerial staff candidates and will provide feedback to the pastor, the HR Manager and the PVC and LFC.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Work closely with groupings and other RMC subject matter experts to manage the transition of ministerial talent from independent parishes to the configurations of parishes under Renew My Church.
Assess existing ministerial talent at parishes.
Maintain consistency in application of policies and procedures (e.g., performance management, benefits administration, recruiting, hiring, on boarding).
Collaborate with the RMC team in developing strategic ministerial staffing plans for groupings, assessing ministerial needs of the groupings under the new configurations.
Identify priority opportunities for management training and improvement as well as ministerial formation.
Help parishes develop action plans to make improvements in individual’s performance; work with pastor, parish staff, and parish councils to ensure buy-in and ownership.
Support and track implementation of action plans
Follow-up with newly placed ministerial staff and create process for regularly elevating issues
Support parishes in staffing ministerial positions during the phases of Renew My Church.
Act as Subject Matter Expert for parishes on ministerial human resources topics.
Assist in strategies to attract, retain and develop ministerial parish staff within the groupings.
Counsel Pastors and parish leaders on the types of skills required for a high functioning ministerial team.
Provide feedback to pastors on performance of parish’s ministerial employees.
Ensures compliance with Archdiocesan policies, regulations, and budget guidelines
Qualifications and Skills:
Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university with study in Theology, Divinity, Pastoral Studies or equivalent.
3+ years of experience in parish ministry and/ or management of a non-for-profit organization, preferably as a lay ecclesial minister
Proven track record coaching or developing others.
3+ years of leadership/management experience in the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Fully committed to the Catholic Church’s teaching on the Gospel of Life.
Ability to articulate and demonstrate knowledge of Catholic theology appropriate to a master’s level in divinity or theology.
Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people from varied social, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds
Strong people development skills, both for professional development as well as for ministerial formation
Strong ability to train others and provide constructive feedback to coach behavior
Culturally and politically astute; understands implicit and explicit decision making processes.
Strong read of people and situations; able to ascertain needs and match resources
Comfortable acting as a catalyst and change agent for defining future strategies and goals.
Focuses on delivery and motivating others to reach ambitious goals.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel and Power Point.
Working knowledge of communications strategies, social media techniques preferred
Conversational Spanish language skills preferred, but not mandatory
Must have excellent relationship building, team building and influence skills.
Must demonstrate understanding, respect and support for Catholic Church teaching, mission and values, and availability for overtime, evening or weekend work.
Must be able to travel to all Vicariate locations and parishes within the Archdiocese.
