School and Tutors on Wheels provides free English language education to low-income adult immigrants through the efforts of a dedicated corps of more than 300 volunteer literacy tutors. As a ministry of the Congregation of St. Joseph, we help carry out the Sisters’ mission to serve those who are typically under-represented. The Program Director helps to fulfill the mission of School and Tutors on Wheels and the Congregation of St. Joseph through coordination, development and day-to-day management of the English literacy program and collaborating with the Executive Director, staff and volunteers.
Coordinate, manage and teach the School and Tutors on Wheels program from September to June, including summer school,
Recruit, train and manage volunteer tutors,
Develop tutor curriculum and supporting materials,
Design a method for placement, tutoring and evaluation of student participants,
Collaborate with the Executive Director in the development and implementation of community outreach strategies to increase community presence,
Collaborate with Executive Director with the evaluation of current and future English literacy, enculturation and community integration needs of non-English speaking residents across Wester Cook, DuPage and Will counties and developing community-based programs as appropriate,
Supervise and evaluate staff as needed.
Experience in Literacy, ESL
Tutoring experience preferred
Curriculum development experience preferred
Strong communications and relational skills
Ability to manage volunteers
Strong flexibility required
Ability to speak Spanish encouraged
