BBF Family Services is looking for a highly skilled, outgoing and positive Mentor. The successful candidate will serve as advisors, educators, role models and leaders giving back to individuals in the community, and contributing knowledge and skills through the sharing of their personal experiences with others.
The role of a Mentor is to give a young person, social, developmental and emotional support, guidance, counseling, and training with the goal of enhancing the youths’ life skills and encouraging connections to natural supports. S/he will help to ensure that the youth develops important academic and life skills, is exposed to new opportunities and a wide array of resources, makes positive life choices, stays in school, and graduates with a plan for pursuing post-secondary education.
The Mentor will report to the Mentor Coordinator.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assist Youth in achieving their stated goals.
To provide friendship, support and inspiration to the mentee(s) with whom you have been assigned with.
Deliver interventions based upon Positive Behavioral Support, activities that meet needs, build on strengths and achieve outcomes.
Serve as a positive role model by modeling desirable behaviors=e.g. patience, tolerance, and reflective listening.
Be respectful of mentees time, opinions, decision making and act as a resource and guide.
Be encouraging, supportive of the mentee and be comfortable and able to establish appropriate boundaries with the mentee and his or her family.
Help the mentee develop a milestone plan for completing high school and going on to college or work.
Consistency in meeting dates; planning outings with the youth; contacting the youth with changes in meeting plans
Empower youth to increase self-esteem gain life skills and engage in positive social activities
Develop weekly or monthly reports and discharge reports.
Assist with skill building in the community.
Educate and link client/family members to existing community services, and act as an advocate in connecting family members to these services.
Act in a professional and courteous manner at all times while performing the duties of mentor.
Responsible for initiating weekly and at times daily contacts with the mentee.
Recognize role as mandated reporter and report any problematic issues.
Requires a criminal record checks and checks of the registry of founded child abuse and neglect complaints.
Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Specifications
Must be able to drive to families’ homes, community events, and meetings at service provider offices or schools.
Must have capacity to work flexible hours based on the needs of the family served.
Good communication skills and professional personal presentation.
Prefer experience navigating child serving systems (behavioral health, juvenile justice, education, etc). May have personally been involved in child serving systems or have family experience.
Must have good organization, time management skills, multitask, and detail oriented.
Should be honest, respectful, and trustworthy.
Should be flexible with work hours including weekends.
Education and Qualifications
High School diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s Degree is preferred in Social Work, Psychology or related Human Services field orequivalent experience. Experience working in a youth-serving environment; familiarity with working with elementary and middle school children in high-risk urban communities preferred.
