La Casa Norte’s mission is to serve youth and families confronting homelessness. We provide access to stable housing and deliver comprehensive services that act as a catalyst to transform lives and communities.
La Casa Norte’s Community Engagement Initiative addresses a variety of issues of interest to La Casa Norte’s stakeholders, including food security, homelessness & housing, violence prevention, and civic engagement. We address these issues on 3 main levels: coalition building between community organizations and residents; advocacy; and direct service programming. We focus our work in Humboldt Park, Logan Square, Back of the Yards, and their surrounding neighborhoods.
This is a Full time (exempt) position that works Monday – Friday with some evening and Saturday hours required.
Expected Goals and Objectives
Goal One: Community Engagement
Develop and implement advocacy strategies around issue areas impacting LCN clients and LCN interests – homeless services, affordable housing, food security & hunger, health care access, safety and violence prevention, etc.;
Represent LCN at various events, working groups, and collaborations impacting the key neighborhoods of Humboldt Park, Logan Square, Back of the Yards, and surrounding communities;
Manage outreach efforts on behalf of all LCN programs (Community Engagement, as well as housing and supportive service programs) through supervision of LCN’s full-time Information & Referral Specialists, development of outreach materials, and evaluating where outreach activities will benefit LCN programs and interests;
Develop civic engagement strategies to increase knowledge, skills, and engagement of two groups: 1) youth and families served by LCN’s housing and case management programs, and 2 community residents in LCN’s key neighborhoods;
Develop leadership on key issues through one-on-ones and leadership meetings; and
Build power by partnering with other organizations addressing issues of housing, food security, safety, and human capital development in Humboldt Park and other key communities for LCN.
Oversee the staffing and activities of the Northwest Food Partners Network (NFPN); a coalition that unites organizations in the mission to provide quality food, promote self-sufficiency and wellness, and build a bridge between emergency food providers and community issues.
Maintain and develop relationships with food pantries and food programs in the neighborhoods of Humboldt Park, Logan Square, Hermosa, East Garfield Park and Belmont Cragin.
Supervise AmeriCorps VISTA, fellows, interns and volunteers in their work on NFPN projects.
Coordinate implementation of Northwest Food Partners Network two-year strategic plan focusing on three main areas:
Growing and managing shared capacity,
Outreach to new partners and audiences, and
Maintaining and improving food rescue efforts.
Support under-resourced NFPN partners through the sharing of funding opportunities, resources and volunteers.
Maintain communication with LCN Leadership team and staff to ensure knowledge sharing and project progress updates.
Manage the development and implementation of La Casa Norte’s Nutrition Center and food security programming.
Oversee the successful operations of La Casa Norte’s new client choice food pantry and community café programs.
Supervise staff and fellows in their day-to-day work with food acquisition and distribution, interacting with clients, and managing a high-traffic food pantry and meal space.
Provide high-level guidance on policies around food handling, collecting and reporting of client data, and training and management of volunteers.
Manage the implementation of nutrition education classes and workshops by community partners, student interns and service learners.
Develop and maintain partnerships with other organizations to continue expanding nutrition education programming.
Analyze current LCN client food needs across all programs, and develop potential solutions.
Keep current on best practices in food security and nutrition programming, affordable food resources and other reports/studies around food security, community nutrition and health.
Maintain and build relationships with current and potential funders.
Assist VP of Strategy & Programs with tracking progress toward goals and reporting to funders.
Develop annual work plan that encompasses discovery period, development of NFPN, and identifies leaders.
Develop and maintain tracking tools to report on progress and utilize applicable databases or systems.
Create monthly, quarterly and annual reports as determined by VP of Strategy & Programs.
Manage program budgets and distribution of program materials.
Document meetings, distribute notes and follow up with members on activities/tasks.
Develop postings, LCN promotion and marketing materials, and update list servs.
Remain current and informed across programs and departments.
Bachelor’s degree required
Bilingual (English/ Spanish) preferred
Strong relational skills, communication (verbal and written)
Ability to plan and coordinate projects
Flexibility in work schedule
Strong member organizational development skills and relationship management
Ability to take initiative and self – direct
Knowledge and literacy in basic computer skills
Demonstrated ability to supervise staff, interns, and/or volunteers
Community organizing experience
Knowledge of popular education methods preferred
Familiarity with Humboldt Park, Logan Square, and Back of the Yards and surrounding communities preferred
