Under the general direction of the Director of Development, the Volunteer Coordinator coordinates all volunteer efforts at JOURNEYS as they relate to department function and agency need. The Volunteer Coordinator develops and maintains a strategy for recruitment, training, engagement and retention of a skilled volunteer corps to support professional staff and enhance the quantity and quality of services available to clients.
The Volunteer Coordinator’s main focus is volunteer coordination within the PADS Program, the HOPE Center Program, the Development Department and the Administration. In addition, there are projects throughout the year that involve volunteers from corporations, volunteer centers, schools, churches and community groups that need to be managed and coordinated. This position will also work closely with the Volunteer Orientation Facilitators to ensure that orientation is efficient and up to date.
VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT | 80%
Work closely with all managers to ensure
Agency volunteer needs are being identified
Appropriate volunteer projects are being created to address needs
Standing volunteer roles are filled and appropriately scheduled
Create and maintain the HOPE Center volunteer schedule and ensure all shifts are filled at all times
Oversee “on-site” phase two training for each newly oriented and placed HOPE Center Volunteer
Interface with the Shelter Manager and the HOPE Center Manager to determine what shifts need volunteers and actively recruit and ensure adequate coverage at each site
Work with each Event Chair to determine the number and type of volunteer roles needed for event planning and “day of” event execution and ensure all roles are filled
Oversee and manage all volunteer projects from outside groups like “make a difference day”, corporate partner one-day volunteer projects, church impact days, etc. and ensure staff coverage for after business hour projects.
Field all incoming phone calls regarding all aspects of agency volunteer opportunities.
Oversees volunteer orientation program and training facilitators and once the Orientation Forms are returned, contact all potential volunteers within 1-2 business days
Maintain ongoing communication with current volunteers regarding agency updates
Host at least one Volunteer Appreciation Day Event per year
Work with staff to evaluate and provide recommendations on strategies for developing new volunteer opportunities
In partnership with department managers, develop internship programs that outline goals and learning objectives

Attend volunteer fairs and maintain volunteer organization memberships
Keep Volunteer Policy and Procedure Manual updated
Update and maintain the Volunteer Orientation Manual and Slide Show
Create the Annual Orientation Schedule and ensure proper coverage by trainers and staff
Collect all “on-site” Phase Two Training Forms, Volunteer Logs and HOPE Center Volunteer Hours Sheets and submit to the Database Specialist for entry into the data collection system.

This work is primarily sedentary and requires travel throughout the service area as well as within the greater Chicago area. The work schedule varies depending on the needs and services of the organization. Evening and weekend work is necessary in order to attend meetings or to participate in events. This position will require exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

A Bachelor Degree in non-profit administration/management, volunteer management or a complimentary field a plus
Two to three years experience in volunteer management
Familiar with the communities within JOURNEYS service area
Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with staff, volunteers and clients in all circumstances
Good inter-personal skills, ability to relate well with persons from a variety socioeconomic and cultural groups.

About JOURNEYS | The Road Home
JOURNEYS | The Road Home provides shelter and social services to the homeless and near homeless in 37 communities in the north & northwest suburbs of Cook County. In the past year, we provided almost 1000 clients with assistance. Comprehensive services and programs are available year-round at our HOPE Center. Shelter is available seven nights a week from October 1 to April 30 at 18 locations throughout our service area, and three nights a week during the summer.
