Cure Violence is a modeled Program to prevent and stop the shootings in Chicago. Enlace Chicago is a community partner that implements the Model and Program. Enlaces’ Focuses and houses the staff that, implements the model through programming. We work in two Community beats 1031 and 1024 and focus on the reduction of Violence in the community through Community Mobilization, Detect Violent incidents, Supervise staff to ensure they meet job requirements, Communicate with Hospital Response, Facilitate planning + Implement target area strategy.
Reports to: Cure Violence Field Supervisor
Accountable to: Executive Director, Violence Prevention Director, Violence Prevention Program Manager, Violence Prevention Administrator, and the Ceasefire Team
Communicates with: Cure Violence participants and their families, community partners, neighborhood stakeholders, parents and students
Informs: Little Village community
Duties and Responsibilities:
To prevent shootings in the neighborhood assigned, Outreach Workers have the following responsibilities:
Get to know and support all the highest risk persons in the community;
Work to intervene in circumstances in which violence is likely, including possible retaliation;
Work to understand why a shooting happened and how to prevent them in the future;
Develop strategies to be better informed about potential community violence;
Work to gain the trust of the community and the highest risk persons so that they know the role of street outreach workers and Cure Violence; and
Knowing when to call for assistance when situations require it.
Job duties are as follows:
Anticipate and be responsive to the Cure Violence Field Supervisor’s requests and needs;
Continuously keep Cure Violence Field Supervisor informed of what is going on in the community and with the program;
Work as a member of a team;
Outreach to the community (individually and as a team member) to build strong relationships with youth, residents, businesses, and community groups;
Identify youth who are gang members and those at-risk for joining gangs and intervening in their lives through case management to aid in solving current problems and preventing future ones;
Serve as linkages and support for individuals to enhance their assistance and use of opportunities and programs in the community (e.g., jobs, GED, drug treatment, counseling);
Advocate for youth through court testimonies, when necessary;
Participate, as necessary, in organizing responses to shootings and increasing Cure Violence’s visibility when shootings/ killings take place;
develop networks with other outreach program workers to coordinate strategic responses to violence;
Mediating situations and preventing retaliation between individuals and groups;
Work with the community, outreach programs, and local law enforcement to gain information that may be helpful in preventing violence;
Identify and diffuse “hot spots” for shootings and violence;
Document shootings and other acts of violence prevented;
Respond to shootings in other communities, when necessary;
Document detailed client case notes; and
Other duties as assigned.
Experience working with at-risk youth and gang members
No pending criminal cases or prior convictions for sexual assault, child abuse, or domestic violence
Excellent communication skills
Experience or training in crisis intervention
Knowledge of Little Village community
Valid Illinois driver’s license, insurance, and good driving record
COMPENSATION: Salary based on experience; comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, life, and short and long term disability insurance, 403b retirement options.
