Education/Teaching/Training, Program Management, Volunteer Management

Urban Youth Mission (UYM) at Fourth Presbyterian Church is an experience of urban mission and ministry in Chicago. It invites groups of youth to explore diverse city neighborhoods while performing valuable hands-on service and reflecting on God, faith, and the Christian call to justice.
UYM has hosted dozens of visiting youth groups from across the United States for our week-long program. The program is staffed by college students (4), who lead visiting groups to their service sites, coordinate their meal preparation, and lead them in reflection on their experience.
The Assistant Director will provide leadership of the UYM program during the afternoons and evenings Sunday-Thursday each week. This will involve leading youth and staff in the evening meal (preparation, service, and clean up) and directing evening reflection activities. It will also involve support tasks designated by the program's director.
The AD will learn all aspects of a youth service organization, including group recruitment, staff training, and staff supervision. In addition, the AD will learn how a ministry of a large urban congregation fits in the larger church ecosystem. The major focus of learning, however, will be connecting service with reflection for youth around a daily shared meal: how to plan that, how to explain it, and how to evaluate it.
This is a valuable opportunity for seminary students wishing to experience ministry in a unique urban context, a ministry both housed in a worshiping congregation and functionally independent of it. In particular, students interested in youth ministry will find this ample opportunity in this role to shepherd groups of high school youth in this role.
