The Editorial Assistant is responsible for helping to proofread, edit, format, and manage production of the many publications of Fourth Presbyterian Church as well as helping to write material for the church website and electronic newsletters. Responsibilities require exceptional proofreading skills and attention to detail and include proofreading and editing both content and layout for newsletters, Sunday bulletins, and brochures; maintaining website pages and calendar information that feeds into the website; and assisting with other digital media, from information kiosk displays to social media outlets.
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to,
Close and careful proofreading communication pieces for the church, such as newsletters, bulletins, and brochures
Editing communication pieces for the church (newsletters, bulletins, and brochures)
Composing communication materials for the church by using templates and set style sheets
Laying out weekly publications
Doing original writing as assigned, whether for newsletters, website, or other vehicles
Helping maintain the Fourth Church website, doing page updates and enhancements
Doing production and typesetting
Formatting electronic media pieces
Managing subscription lists and delivery of electronic media
Assist with social media and digital displays
Working with vendors to coordinate print jobs
Meeting with colleagues to determine their communications needs
Assisting with regular mailings
Use the S.P.I.R.I.T. principles of hospitality when interacting with visitors, guests, members, and staff of Fourth Presbyterian Church.
BA degree or equivalent; English or journalism degree preferred
Familiarity with church language (to aid in proofreading) preferred but not required
Exceptional grammar and proofreading skills (a proofreading test will be part of the interview)
Excellent writing skills
Ability to identify departures from layout guidelines
Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Word and in a Windows environment; familiarity with InDesign, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver is a plus but not required
Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and follow-through
Strong ability to organize and prioritize tasks
Strong ability to respond quickly and to meet deadlines
Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills
Good problem-solving skills, with the ability to apply knowledge in new situations and exercise good judgment
Comfort working in a faith-based and diverse organization
