This position will ensure the External Affairs team is able to execute annual fundraising efforts and accomplish its goal of raising two million dollars this fiscal year by managing a comprehensive set of grant coordination functions. The Grants Writer is responsible for preparing excellent proposals and supporting documents that will help Christopher House secure funding from corporate, foundation, and public sources. This position is also critical in supporting the External Affairs team’s efforts to strategize and prioritize to expand the grants portfolio. The Grants Writer reports to the Associate Director of Development.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Development, the Grants Writer will oversee and ensure the timely production of high quality documents that reflect a deep awareness of the audience, speaks to the reader’s motivations for supporting the agency and reflect the reader’s level of familiarity with the agency and the field (human service, early childhood education, youth programs, etc.). Translate data into a readable and accessible format, create compelling documents that balance hard data and anecdotal storytelling, actively seek new funding opportunities and conduct research to evaluate fit, and remain current on funding opportunities from various sources. Adhere to (and improve) existing proposal completion timeline that ensures all necessary actions are taken to create and submit excellent proposals and reports ahead of deadline. Continually seek to enhance processes by identifying efficiency and effectiveness solutions. Maintain accurate donation forecasts and path to goal plans for the fiscal year. Ensure that stewardship actions necessary to secure and continue funding are taken by staff and leadership. Build relationships with Christopher House programmatic leadership and department teams to ensure the External Affairs department has consistent access to up-to-the-minute program information. Work with staff to ensure grant agreements, payments and report data is accurate and entered into Raiser’s Edge.
QUALIFICATIONS: Proven success in managing a comprehensive set of grant coordination functions. Basic understanding of fundraising principles, including techniques and practices that will garner support from various funders, including foundations, corporations, public and religious institutions. Ability to work effectively with a team. A passion for work with children, families, social services and education. Capable of writing and developing innovative ways to communicate key messages—visually and in text. Effective at gathering and synthesizing information into clear, compelling documents. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to build a rapport and coordinate on proposals with a variety of stakeholders, including staff and funders. Strong research skills. Comfortable writing in a collaborative environment. Adept at integrating feedback into drafts. Ability to prioritize and manage laterally and upward to achieve results. Experience working in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment while demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness when faced with dynamic priorities and needs. Experience with philanthropy research tools, budgets and Raiser’s Edge a plus. Proficiency in Microsoft Office required. Ability to work outside standard work hours, attending fundraising events, and other meetings and events when necessary.
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree required
