The senior manager, internal communications leads the development and execution of internal communications strategies at the Ounce. The senior manager is responsible for building communications efficiencies, cultivating organizational alignment, driving employee engagement, and inspiring action through compelling storytelling. Additionally, they will provide communications counsel and support for Educare Chicago, the Ounce’s early childhood school committed to ensuring that all young children have the best possible chance for success in school and in life.
Essential Job Duties:
Communications transformation: Partner with the vice president of communications to transform the internal communication function at the Ounce.
Communications optimization: Develop & manage annual communications plans, enhanced internal communications policies and protocols, optimized work flows, strategic communications tools/templates, and best practice sharing – leveraging the Ounce’s intranet platform. Support communications at Educare Chicago.
Communications council: partner with People & Culture and Finance leaders to assess communication needs and develop strategic communication solutions to achieve their goals. Consult and advise internal team leads and other staff on projects ranging from day-to-day communications to long-term initiatives and strategies.
Storyteller: Lead the creation of a storytelling practice at the Ounce; managing and executing a process for discovering/creating/ producing stories about children and families, early education and the programs, research and advocacy work at the Ounce.
Employee engagement: Drive effective communications and messaging to create a sense of excitement and purpose, connection to organizational strategy, mission, impact and outcomes for children and families.
Brand ambassador: Bring brand to life throughout all communication channels. Promote and share brand standards encouraging staff adoption. Help optimize brand in new office space.
Foster internal alignment: Develop and execute an ongoing series of communications intended to drive greater understanding and confidence in the organization’s strategic plan and positioning – through various internal content channels including email, print, newsletters, web, video and all staff meetings.
Measurement. Maintain qualitative and quantitative measurement for internal communications to evaluate the effectiveness of messages, communications channels (types and use) and delivery (voice, frequency, etc.).

Required Qualifications – Required qualifications to effectively perform the job. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. (Additional requirements may be designated by position.)
Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing or related field.
At least five to seven years of experience in internal, strategic or executive communications.
Superior writing skills.
Knowledgeable about executive and corporate communications best practices and committed to identifying and applying emerging approaches to communications.
Previous experience supporting C-suite leaders, a plus.

Experienced in identifying key themes and relevant details from complex subject matter and developing thought-provoking and engaging narratives that connect internally.
Demonstrated ability to cultivate and sustain relationships with diverse audiences. Strong interpersonal skills and experience interacting with and influencing executives and peers.
Ability to think strategically and deliver tactically.
Demonstrated ability to be diplomatic and make sound judgments while thinking and working independently with minimal direction in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment.
Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
General office conditions. Exposed to moderate noise levels.
Must be able to travel within and between sites. Some sites may necessitate climbing stairs.
