Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Philanthropy, the Senior Director of Foundations is responsible for the strategic visioning and planning for the Foundation Relations area and supervision of the Foundation Relations team. This position works in conjunction with the various constituency-based development officers, deans, department chairs, faculty, and staff to maximize gift and grant support at the major gift level from both national and local foundations. This position also collaborates with departments within the university to determine best practices and develop policies and guidelines for the university's external grants management process.
Responsibilities & Duties
Develops annual and long-range strategic plans for Foundation Relations and directs the identification, qualification, solicitation, and stewardship of foundation partners and donors. Ensures that, over time, the program has a sufficient number of qualified prospects to achieve its established goals.
Carries a portfolio of major gift-level prospects and be responsible for direct foundation solicitations, with a primary focus on securing resources to support the university's goals and priorities.
Provides support and guidance to faculty and staff with the proposal and grant process.
Plans and oversees the Foundation Relations grant management process.
Works in collaboration with other university departments to ensure adherence to external grant policies and procedures.
Supervises both the budget and staff of the Foundation Relations department.
Advises and assists with initiatives at the request of the Associate Vice president for Advancement; participates, to a reasonable extent, in university-wide activities and initiatives, task forces, and committees.
Maintains a commitment to ongoing professional development and education.
Performs other duties as assigned
Education & Experience
7 - 9 years fund-raising experience focused on cultivating and soliciting organizational and/or individual prospects.
Proven success in securing funds from local and national foundations.
Advanced degree beyond a Bachelor's
The Senior Director supervises the Director and Associate Director of Foundation Relations, and the Foundation Relations Specialist.
Creates and oversees the Foundation Relations budget process.
Other Skills & Abilities Required
An appreciation of the role of all advancement areas: development, alumni relations, public relations, marketing, and admissions--and the ability to work successfully with colleagues in all five areas.

Ability to develop long-term plans and execute those plans on an annual basis.
An awareness and understanding of the value of an education grounded in the liberal arts.
Position requires some travel and occasional evening and weekend work for events and donor meetings.
