The Theraplay Institute (TTI) is seeking a dynamic Executive Director to lead and expand our important organization.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, this position requires high-level skills in strategy development and implementation, strong operational management experience including financial acumen, Board and Staff leadership, and client/member relationship-building skills. The next Executive Director will also possess excellent communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and commitment to integrity.
Located in Evanston, Illinois, TTI has 15 staff members. Additional certified contract trainers provide their expertise in the classroom, teaching our method to hundreds of mental health professionals, teachers, and parents each year locally and around the world. Specific responsibilities include:
Create and update short-term and long-range plans for the future.
Invite Board and staff participation in planning.
Evaluate TTI’s ability to support its growth, with emphasis on domestic growth.
Identify domestic and global opportunities and threats related to Theraplay training.
Ensure consistent, continuous communications between Board, staff, and TTI partners.
Operations Management and Human Resource Management
Oversee day-to-day operations of the organization, establishing best practices.
Hire, coach, and develop staff to ensure their talents and abilities are fully engaged for organizational effectiveness.
Create and maintain a collaborative working environment which attracts, retains, and motivates talent.
Approve and oversee implementation of the HR policies, procedures and practices including job descriptions, staff development, and performance evaluation for all staff.
Approve contracts and contract employees for the clinic.
Oversee accounting function, including budget preparation, cash flow, tax returns, and other required reports, with oversight of the Board’s finance committee.
Provide the Board with quarterly financial reports.
Introduce policies to minimize financial and legal risks.
Negotiate leases and approve major purchases for goods or services.
Marketing and Public Relations
Oversee the creation and implementation of marketing and communications plans.
Oversee expansion of communications platforms (website, social networking, advertising, blogs) and explore new, creative opportunities for messaging.
Strategically augment public outreach to cultivate new partnerships and promote achievements in targeted marketplaces.
Serve as TTI’s spokesperson publicly and with media. Submit stories related to our work, including letters to editors and responses to press inquiries, and serve as the point person for press releases.
Act as senior editor of bi-annual newsletter and published materials.
Oversee staff efforts to increase sales of training and products including media products.
Actively identify new markets and opportunities.
Network to develop collaborative relationships to expand services and increase profitability.
Program, Product, Service Delivery
Work with staff to ensure high quality Theraplay related programs, products, and services.
Facilitate efforts to execute new ideas and products.
Work with staff and Board to evaluate current methods of marketing, scheduling, staffing, and delivering education seminars and certification training.
Work to ensure high fidelity of the training and therapeutic protocols.
Deliver trainings through greater use of technology, maximizing accessibility and cost effectiveness.
Servicemark, Brand Protection, and International Relations
Create and maintain protocols for proper use and protection of Theraplay servicemarks.
Develop protocols for organizing Theraplay in new countries, including servicemark registration, website development, and organizational development.
Support key Theraplay trained professionals in new countries to establish brand program.
Lead networking activities fostering global Theraplay relations, including planning an International Conference every 2-3 years.
Oversee Annual Appeal campaign.
Alongside Board and Marketing Director, identify fundraising opportunities. Develop plan to cultivate individual and corporate giving.
Actively seek new funding sources from foundations and grant opportunities.
Board Administration and Support
Work closely with the Board to develop and implement TTI’s plan for growth.
Provide Board with monthly operations reports and advise of any challenges or time sensitive issues.
Organize, participate in, document, and follow up with Board committee meetings.
Assist with Board development as needed, including recruitment of new members.
The next Executive Director of TTI will bring the following professional and personal qualifications and experience to the position:
Proven ability to develop and strengthen relationships with staff, volunteers, funders, donors, and Board of Directors.
A track record as a confident leader with a collegial style that reflects mutual respect, engenders trust, and motivates people to work in highly-effective teams.
Demonstrates a high degree of self-awareness, emotional intelligence, warmth, approachability, and humility.
Solid operational experience including business operations, budgeting, program management, and staff management.
Depth of understanding of the nonprofit sector through prior work experience or nonprofit Board experience.
Experience working successfully in a rapidly growing organization.
While direct clinical experience is not required, knowledge of mental and behavioral health services is a plus. S/he will embody the Theraplay principles by demonstrating them in interactions with all.
Demonstrated capability to weigh options and actions at a strategic level.
Proven experience as a leader with the persistence to implement the goals and tactical actions needed to drive results of a mission-driven organization.
Possesses sound understanding of resource development strategies, including grant writing and cultivation of strong private donor relationships.
Online education and training, licensing, and certification experience is highly desirable.
Proficiency in technology and social media.
Excellent verbal, presentation, and written communication skills.
