The Great Books Foundation seeks to broaden the range of its mission-led activities; to highlight an increased focus on development, community initiatives, and outreach; and to inspire new generations of supporters. The Foundation seeks a skilled development and communications professional to oversee this unique opportunity to build a compelling narrative that resonates with current and new donors.
The newly created position of Development and Communications Director will be based in Chicago and will be responsible for developing the Great Books Foundation’s fundraising program and campaigns, communicating with current and prospective donors, and building and implementing a strong development plan for the organization. This enthusiastic and effective Director will also identify and pursue grant-funding opportunities, plan and implement social media campaigns, and lead event-planning initiatives Foundation-wide. This position requires the cultivation and management of individual and corporate gifts, as well as planned and annual giving campaigns.
The Director will work in conjunction with the President and Chief Executive Officer, the Executive Team, and the Marketing Manager in the areas of fundraising, public relations, partnerships, and marketing
Implement and evolve the strategic plan for the Foundation in the areas of fundraising, public relations, and marketing by evaluating existing initiatives and campaigns and recommending partnerships consistent with the Foundation’s mission and vision
Establish and maintain relationships with various partnering organizations and utilize these to strategically enhance the mission of the Foundation
Identify potential donors and otherwise increase the Foundation’s overall visibility
Cultivate and sustain relationships with a wide variety of constituencies, including current and potential donors, foundations and government sources, local businesses, and community partners
Oversee fundraising efforts and, in time, engage other professional fundraisers in seeking annual, major campaign and planned gifts
Perform other relevant duties as assigned
Bachelor’s degree and five or more years of experience in professional fundraising/development, including applied knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations with foundations, individuals, corporations, and other sources
At least five years of marketing and communications experience, with a focus on social media and digital marketing venues
Experience with preparing, submitting, and managing grant proposals to foundation, government, and corporate sources
Transparent and high-integrity leadership
Solid, proven budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making, and reporting
Strong organizational abilities, including collaborating, planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation
Experience with, interest in, and a proven track record of major gift fundraising
Strong written and oral communication skills and appropriate self-confidence and maturity to effectively communicate the Foundation’s vision at all levels and across organizational lines in a manner inspiring to staff, board members, donors, and volunteers
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with staff using a hands-on approach to the workplace and supervision, and with a willingness to take on any task
Demonstrated execution in fundraising and relationship management
