YJC’s mission is success for young people in the workplace and in life. We work with 14-25 year-old youth and young adults to define viable career goals and work to achieve them. We assist youth through career exploration, to acquire their first job, to acquire job readiness skills including interviewing and resume writing, to work towards success in the workplace, and to plan their long-term career goals. For participants experiencing barriers to success, we work with referral agencies to provide additional supports.
YJC was founded in Evanston in 1983. Identifying an increase in participants commuting from Chicago, the agency incorporated an expansion into Chicago in its strategic direction in 2014. YJC currently works in Evanston and Chicago public high schools, and staff work with out-of-school youth, employers, and partner organizations throughout Cook County. The agency will increase services in Chicago in the coming years, while also growing the number of Evanston and Northshore young adults served.
YJC provides direct service programs to support youth and young adults to successfully move into the workplace. This position works closely with both the CORE Services Team (Enrollment, Training and Employer Services) as well as the Career Pathways Team. The role of this position is to recruit, engage and support youth in YJC out of school youth (OSY) program.
Primary responsibilities include:
Provide employment counseling, coaching, placement, and retention support for youth ages 16-25.
Work with youth to identify interests, explore careers, sharing information about current labor market trends, and guide them toward goal setting in alignment with their skills and needs.
Work in tandem with the Career Pathways team to provide supports toward longer-term career planning and opportunities.
With YJC staff, employers, community organizations and school districts, recruit young adult participants.
Work with Out of School Youth (OSY) team and the CORE Services Team to ensure youth are enrolled in best-fit programs for which they are eligible.
Build and maintain relationships with nonprofit partners, employers, municipal partners and other organizations to recruit and support youth in programs; regularly attend outreach events.
Work closely with employers and partners, to identify opportunities and place eligible youth into placements, internships and more.
Report/record all participant activities in required databases
Track and report all areas related to program enrollment, eligibility criteria, outcomes, activities, documentation, and other requirements.
Education/Work Experience: • B.A./B.S. degree or equivalent education and experience in workforce development, youth development, community outreach, and/or case management Core Competencies • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and history of database management and accurate record keeping. • Exceptional relationship building skills • Strong time management skills and self-directed • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and public speaking ability • Personal commitment to YJC’s mission
