A key member of the senior leadership team, the Director of Finance will report to the Executive Director. The Director of Finance is responsible for strategic and operational aspects of the organization's finance functions, with an eye for continuously developing and improving systems. Functions include: accounting; budgeting; internal and external financial reporting; treasury management; cash forecasting; fiscal management of public and private grants and contracts; policy development; audit; and compliance. The Director of Finance ensures that all leadership has timely access to all relevant financial data (historical as well as current) and will play a key role in the development, execution, and impact measurement and necessary course correction in support of LPCS’s mission and strategy. The Director of Finance works with the Executive Director on compliance with LPCS state and city financing/grant funding, and provides proactive analyses of organization financials and budget planning.
Strategy and Vision
Advise the Executive Director and other key members of the senior management team on financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, investment priorities, and operational policy matters.
Serve as the management liaison to the Board of Directors and the Finance Committee.
Contribute to the development of the strategic goals and objectives as well as the overall management of the organization, maintaining continuous lines of communication and keeping the Executive Director informed of all critical issues.
Represent the organization externally, particularly in relationships with core vendors, legal counsel, public accountants, auditors, and other operational partners.
Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
Develop and monitor annual and multi-year operating budgets in conjunction with the Executive Director and other Directors.
Lead organizational processes to establish and oversee annual and long-term capital budgets.
Advise the Executive Director on key financial matters of the institution, including the fiscal health, strategic financial structure, financial performance against budget, cash flow, investments, and controls, as well as provide objective, analytical, and independent advice on matters facing the institution.
Conduct financial modeling, benchmarking, and contingency planning on a periodic basis and in response to specific issues, and forecast the organization’s financial position including reports on financial stability and growth.
Carry out financial analyses related to fundraising and special event plans, proposals, and stewardship.
Report to the Finance Committee and, as requested, the Board of Directors while serving as liaison to financial investment advisors/managers.
Develop and oversee endowment and investment policies and procedures.
Provide leadership and guidance on all financial matters to the senior leadership team as well as all staff.
Represent the organization to a wide range of financial stakeholders, including financial institutions, government agencies, grant makers, auditors, and public officials.
Work with the Executive Director and senior staff to ensure that the proper balance of program development and financial discipline is maintained.
Maintain long-term building replacement schedule and reserves.
Ensure compliance with and maintenance of all relevant licensing, Secretary of State reporting, annual property tax exemptions, insurance and reporting requirements.
Track and report on long-term financial assets including capital campaign funds, endowment, multi-year grants, and other restricted and unrestricted funds.
Provide effective reporting of financial results to the organization’s senior leadership to create a culture that proactively self-adjusts in anticipation of environmental changes and external risks, and is generally best-positioned to leverage unexpected opportunities.
Accounting and Financial Operations and Controls:
Manage accounting operations and the preparation of monthly and annual financial statements.
Monitor bank balances, maintain FDIC insurance limits, make bank deposits as needed, and assure adequate cash balances to cover expense payments.

Maintain the financial records of LPCS in compliance with GAAP.
Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures; identify and act on process improvements to increase efficiency and customer service in financial operations.
Work with external auditor on annual financial audits and unified federal audits, as well as other policies during the year as needed.
Ensure accuracy, consistency, and timeliness of budgeting, invoicing, financial reporting for all government agencies, private foundations, and major donors.
Continually ensure that financial software system is meeting organizational needs; oversee coordination of financial system with administrative software systems for other functions, including program registration, fundraising, special events, and grant management.
Maintain continuous lines of communication regarding finances throughout the organization.
Keep Executive Director apprised of all current and potential finance matters.
Forecast and manage cash flow, including overseeing cash disbursements in accordance with disbursement policies.
Ensure timely and accurate payroll processing, 401(k) payments.
Other duties as required.

A finance executive with operational experience and a proven track record of creative problem-solving and change management
Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Accounting, ideally with a MBA, CPA, or related professional degree.
A minimum of 7 years of comparable work experience, preferably in a nonprofit or philanthropic setting
Demonstrated experience in financial management and accounting, including experience in budgeting, financial reporting, audit, and federal grants management
Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills, including skills in negotiation and conflict resolution; must possess strong mentoring and coaching skills with experience in leading a team with diverse levels of expertise
Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; a team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical finance and operational initiatives
Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills as well as the ability to effectively interface with senior management and the Board of Directors
Shared commitment to the organization’s mission
Working knowledge of QuickBooks software preferable
Knowledge of HUD Scattered Site contracts preferred
Knowledge of City of Chicago’s Department Family & Supportive Services contracts
MBA or CPA preferred
