Polished Pebbles Girls Mentoring Program provides girls with the opportunity to learn the vital life skill of effective communication. This Chicago-based program in 2009 and has helped over 3,000 girls ages 7-17 become effective communicators at home, school, and the workplace. In addition to weekly school/afterschool programming, girls also experience a variety of job shadow and career mentoring experiences with local and national businesses such as Blue Cross Blue Shield-IL, Bloomingdale’s, The Chicago Tribune. This work is supported with a network of over 500 volunteers, including many male mentors, have built a network of support with business and community partners. The organization expanded its signature career mentoring initiative to girls in Indiana, Texas and a college version at Duke University.
SUMMARY: This position will assist with the development, implementation, and coordination of the Polished Pebbles curriculum within the aforementioned projects. The individual in this position is primarily responsible for independently leading sessions and activities. Furthermore, this position will focus on fostering the development of relationships between the girls, young women, and the mentors. We are seeking dynamic and engaging facilitators with experience with middle & high school students, and college students who come from a variety of backgrounds including some of Chicagoland's most underserved communities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead sessions held during the school day, or during after school program hours, (on an as-needed basis) throughout the duration of the school year;
Assist in the development and maintenance of school and business partnerships;
Provide an inviting and safe environment for students and mentors;
Promote regular attendance and active participation of students;
Foster a setting that assists with self-disclosure, understanding, and overall support;
Provide individual support and guidance to students;
Maintain routine and necessary communication with other staff members and volunteers;
Attend all scheduled trainings and meetings.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree required. Master’s degree preferred. (preferred in education, human services, psychology, social work, or related field);
4-5 years of experience in youth development programming, youth group facilitation, or training;
Experience working with girls from a variety of communities, specifically those that live in urban communities;
Experience (preferred) with implementing job readiness programming;
Experience as school or youth program coordinator (preferred);
Demonstrated capacity for empathy and non-judgment.
Spanish-speaking a plus but not required
Willingness to travel throughout various Chicago neighborhoods
