Director of CF Physician Scientist Training Programs has overall responsibility for ensuring the Physician Training Programs, including 1st-5th Year Clinical Fellowship Awards, Harry S Shwachman Awards (HSA), and LeRoy Matthews Awards (LMA) are relevant and appropriate to the CFF mission. Oversees and participates in review of grant applications and scientific programs. Works closely with other CFF staff within the Medical Department to gain feedback on the program, applicants, and funding decisions. Interacts and monitors Clinical Fellowship, HSA, and LMA awardees to optimize chance of research success and assure progress on stated goals. Aides in development of scope and content of Physician Scientist Training Program priorities and scientific conferences / meetings. Reviews medical and scientific literature to determine utility of scientific approaches/findings to CFF mission.
Prepares summaries of scientific projects/programs on a level appropriate for an educated lay audience. Makes presentations to audiences of various educational backgrounds describing CFF’s efforts to attract, develop, and retain exceptional clinicians and investigators into cystic fibrosis to address the evolving needs of the CF community. Aides in preparation of yearly Medical/Scientific budget relevant to the Physician Scientist Programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Utilizes experience and knowledge to guide potential grant applicants towards appropriate funding mechanisms.
Participates in initial review and assignment of Physician Training Program applications to appropriate reviewers.
Provides oversight of grant application review process to ensure each application receives a fair and accurate review.
Reviews scientific progress reports and financial reports of Physician Training Programs ensuring CFF’s investment is being used appropriately and in accordance with existing guidelines.
Participates in development of scope and content of scientific conferences and meetings.
Aides in the development of Requests for Applications or Requests for Proposals relevant to Physician Training Programs.
Gathers feedback from institutions and applicants to more effectively recruit, retain, and foster transition from fellow to successful faculty.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Advanced degree(s) (M.S., M.D., or Ph.D.) in medical sciences is strongly preferred.
Minimum five years of relevant professional experience required or minimum 10 years without an advanced degree.
Scientific knowledge relative to cystic fibrosis pathophysiology is strongly encouraged.
Strong interpersonal skills allowing successful interaction with medical team co-workers and with Physician Training Program awardees required.
Strong written and verbal communication skills required with an ability to distill scientific findings to audiences of various educational backgrounds.
Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
Ability to concentrate on detailed work, to sit at the computer or answer telephones for 25% of their time. Ability to reach or bend for filing or other needs.
