The Chicago Lights Dance Academy, a program of Chicago Lights, supports learning and self-expression through dance instruction for students who attend Chicago Public Schools (CPS) in addition to academic and social emotional support. The Chicago Lights Dance Academy offers three core programs: in-school instruction and dance ensembles, Saturday classes, and a month-long Summer Dance Intensive. Through these programs students learn various dances styles and corresponding technique, vocabulary, music, costuming, and choreography.
Chicago Lights Dance Academy Teaching Artists are responsible for planning, implementation, and instruction of in-school residencies at Chicago Public Elementary Schools around the CLDA scope and sequence. The teaching artists will work closely with school staff to provide high quality instruction to students in pre-K through eighth grades.
Instruct students in a manner that is interesting and keeps them engaged throughout the class
Travel and arrive on time at various locations throughout Chicago where programs are held
Attend end of session/end of school year performances
Maintain constant and clear communication with the teachers or coordinators at the school or organization where the program is being facilitated
Maintain constant and clear communication with CLDA Director to ensure she is always aware of how the program is running
Complete forms and paperwork in a thorough and timely fashion
Read, understand, and properly deliver material from a syllabus
Attend meetings and workshops to complete the training required for teaching various syllabi
Prepare materials in advance of classes for distributing to students
Use e-mail as needed from personal computer
Use the S.P.I.R.I.T. principles of hospitality when interacting with visitors, guests, members, and staff of Fourth Presbyterian Church and Chicago Lights
Other duties as assigned as needed.
This is a seasonal, limited part-time position. Your schedule will be determined by the needs of the school, but will consist of two to five classes per week between the hours of 8am to 4pm on Monday through Friday. Requires occasional afternoon/evening hours.
Program aligns with the Chicago Public School academic schedule and requires a commitment when school is in session. Possible opportunity to teach during the summer months during the Summer Dance Intensive session in July.
Professional dance experience required, undergraduate degree recommended
Must have five or more years of performance and teaching experience in dance
In addition to choreographic and improvisational skills, must have extensive knowledge of a variety of dance styles
Must have experience in working with children in a public school setting
Demonstrated ability to work within a multicultural environment
Excellent classroom management skills
Strong communication, presentation, and group management skills are recommended
Strong organizational skills and computer skills, and excellent writing and oral skills are recommended
Should be able to think quickly and creatively and adapt to new situations in a fast-paced environment
Experience in trauma informed care preferred, but not required
