Housing Development Specialist
The Housing Development Specialist is an integral part of KYC’s Community Living Team. The Housing Development Specialist is responsible for development and expansion of temporary and permanent housing opportunities in the Chicagoland area for individuals transitioning out of nursing facilities. Work to build and maintain strong relationships with present and future partners (landlords and property managers) to encourage and expand participation. With training in landlord-tenant laws, is also responsible for informing clients and other team members about tenant rights and responsibilities. Works closely with Transition Specialists and Care Managers before and during the transition of individual from Nursing Facilities throughout the service area.
Build new and maintain present relationships with landlords, property management companies, etc. to develop a Regional Housing List
Locate at least 3 units per client and coordinate housing showings with Transition Specialists based on needs of clients
Coordinate with Transition Specialists to gather information from potential clients to determine housing needs and preferences
Assist with application process for Section-8, Project Based Vouchers, Bridge Subsidies, and other housing support and subsidized opportunities
Assist clients with applying for any housing opportunities that may have openings or waiting lists and signup for State and County-wide Referral Networks and Entry Systems
Explore and create options for cluster housing, scattered site, and other opportunities to remove barriers to housing
Work with clients and staff to identify appropriate housing options in the area, based on client’s preference
Educate and disseminate information to staff and clients regarding fair housing laws and assist with denial appeals
Provide information to internal departments (i.e. Outreach Team, Transition Coordination and Care Management Teams) and external provider agencies as requested to coordinate and assure the appropriateness of services and continuity of care; including representing the organization at community and housing events as assigned.
Ensure compliance with data tracking and reporting requirements of the program, including coordination with administrative team members.
Strong interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently on special projects
Demonstrated knowledge of local (State of Illinois/Cook County/Dupage County/etc) resources, subsidies, and housing requirements
Ability to utilize in-person networking, cold calling, web services to locate leads and resources.
Ability to collaborate with outside providers and partners
Trained in landlord-tenant laws (preferred)
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in the community: within Nursing Facilities, client residences, or potential housing sites
Roughly half of the employee’s time will be spent in an office space: employee has accessibility to all KYC locations, based on office vacancy.
While in transit, the employee may experience changing road and whether conditions
In supporting clients to live independently, employee may be exposed to varying home conditions
Full Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt, 37.5 hour work week
Must work a flexible schedule in response to the needs of the target population served, including rotating direct on-call responsibilities, which includes evening, weekend, and holiday hours.
Preferred experience with housing development and understanding of local resources, subsidies, and housing requirements.
Education & Experience
HS/GED, preferred BA/BS in Social Work or closely related discipline from an accredited institution of higher learning
Minimum 21 years of age
Valid Illinois driver’s license, auto insurance, and access to reliable vehicle
Computer proficiency, including knowledge of Word, Excel and internet skills
Preferred experience working with adults with serious mental illness and/or adults with other complex physical health and mobility needs
Experience working with housing development and understanding of local (NW Cook County, IL) resources
