Chicago Lights Urban Farm is hiring a part-time Production Assistant for the 2020 season. The position will focus on carrying out the crop plan, harvesting and selling produce to the local community, managing compost systems, managing assistant growers, and possibly working with crews of high school age youth in the fall. It will also offer hands-on experience in urban agriculture and marketing skills and farm-based education practices. The position is an integral part of the Farm, as they will be working alongside staff and volunteers to ensure the successful and safe production and harvesting of over 50 varieties of vegetables, herbs, and flowers. They will need to be comfortable working with people of all ages and need to be flexible and able to work in a dynamic, outdoor, and changing environment.
Chicago Lights Urban Farm is a 3/4 acre farm that empowers youth and community residents in the near north neighborhood to have increased economic opportunities through access to organic produce, nutritional education, work force training, and microenterprise development. It is dedicated to cultivating a thoughtful and engaged community of youth and adults through educational and economic opportunities, hands-on learning experiences, and access to fresh, local, and sustainably grown produce.
The Farm is accessible via the Chicago Brown Line CTA stop which is three blocks away.
The Production Assistant will work with the Program Manager and other staff to:
Carry out the crop plan via soil fertility management, assisting with direct seeding and transplanting crops, hoop house pruning, weeding, irrigation system management, and other tasks as needed.
Assist with weekend watering
Harvest, process, and pack produce in a safe manner for CSA
Assist with site protocols and sanitation procedures to reduce the spread of COVID-19
Help to run a weekly on-site farmstand. This involves organizing the harvest list/availability, harvest and processing for farmstand, customer service related issues, money management, and breaking down/cleaning up the farmstand.
Act as crew leader for volunteers. This involves both setting up and cleaning up after volunteer groups and leading volunteers through farm tasks.
Participate in community outreach activities
Participate in professional development trainings as appropriate
Other duties as assigned or needed
Demonstrated experience with gardening/urban farming
Must take a criminal background check (Previous conviction does not necessarily disqualify applicant from consideration)
Strong communication skills
Ability to lift 40 pounds and physical stamina to stand for long periods of time, including lifting and carrying heavy objects
Farm work requires physical and mental endurance, and days are spent outside in any weather
Able to shift gears quickly and efficiently
Comfortable operating as member of a team
Comfort in working in a faith-based environment
Ability to thrive in a diverse, equitable, just, and inclusive environment
Strong work ethic and personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to Chicago Lights’ mission
Additional Salary Information: Part-time, Seasonal position, 22 hours/week, exact days tbd
Employment dates are June (or asap) through fall
Employee also receives 1 full share of vegetables (during employment dates and when available).
